PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
My Reasons:
~ The desire to learn
~ The desire to share my knowledge with others
~ The need to learn from my students
~ Vitality and necessity to teach and learn English
To start with, Why do I teach? is the first question I have to ask and answer before asking why I teach English. I have always had a desire to learn anything I can. I believe the ideal teacher must be a lifelong learner first. Secondly, as soon as I learn something, whether trivial or crucial, I have always loved sharing it with the first person I come in contact with if I think s/he can understand it. I am not using the word “need” here but “understand” because I do not think I may always know everyone's needs. Moreover, even if they may not need that information at that time, they may need it at some other time. However, I must ensure that the person I share this information with will understand it. If I try to teach something difficult for the level or age of my students, then they may be crushed by that information, thus become demotivated afterwards. I think a teacher must know what to teach to whom. Thirdly, I like learning from my own students, which makes my job fulfilling. When students bring a lot of their own life experiences to the classroom, I have an idea of their likes and dislikes and their interests so that I can make use of them while introducing a new topic to them. I like it as they want to voice their opinions, which can broaden my perspective. Last, when it comes to the question Why teach English?, the answer is easy; the world revolves around English, which means there are a great variety of resources in English on any topic one needs to learn about. The fact that the world speaks English makes it necessary for everyone to speak it, which makes it essential to speak English if you want to find a job.
My Objectives:
~ To coach
~ To motivate and inspire students to learn
~ To positively change students
~ To teach students to learn about life through English
~ To make students realise their potential
to become the best they can be
~ To get students to apply the course material in real life situations
My only goal is not to teach English but to coach my students -teenagers, university students and businesspeople- to motivate and inspire them to learn, and to change them in a positive way. My primary purpose is to provide them with the vital knowledge of life through English. My first and foremost aim is to make my students realise their full potential and to become the best they can be. Lastly, I endeavor to ensure that they understand and apply what they learn in my class in real life situations.
My Challenges:
~ Students with English speaking phobia
The greatest challenge of my job is to have a few students in my class who have tried learning English for a long time, but who have failed, and thus have lost hope. In this case, I ask them to give me a chance. It is a challenge for them to understand me at first. They look at me as if there were a million to one chance to learn from me as I never speak any other language but English in class while using body language to full capacity. After seeing my effort to communicate with them, they quickly learn that they have to make an effort as I am determined to teach English through English.
My Methodology:
~ To speak only in English in and out of classroom
~ To make learning English fun
~ Vocabulary-based teaching to Grammar-based teaching
~ Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
~ To integrate music in the classroom
First of all, the only way to teach English is to speak it in and out of the classroom. My students hear me speak Turkish or French only when I bid them farewell. Secondly, since I take great pleasure teaching English, I also want my students to love learning it which is why I make learning fun. I strongly believe it is easier to learn, remember and practise English when we have fun doing so. Thirdly, I focus more on teaching vocabulary than teaching grammar because we communicate with words, we think with the words we know and we express ourselves with these words. We speak and write what we think. That’s why our vocabulary reflects our personality and why I focus less on grammar. Fourthly, I use NLP techniques in my classes which accelerate learning as these techniques reinforce different visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles. Lastly, I integrate music in the classroom to improve students' creativity, increase their learning ability, focus concentration and increase attention.
